Light in Winter Festival: Urban Lichen Walk

Sponsored by the Library and the Finger Lakes Native Plant Society (FLNPS), this program will include a short, indoor presentation on identifying these stunning, but often overlooked, creatures, followed by a walking tour of downtown where participants will have the opportunity to test their identification skills. David Werier, a botanical consultant and steering committee member of FLNPS will serve as guide during this fascinating and informative walk. He will help participants appreciate lichen by explaining their morphology and identifying characteristics. The program is free and open to the public. Family Adventures in Nature: Winter Survival

Could you survive a night in the woods in freezing weather? How about a week? Learn to build shelters and fires, and learn to gather food and water in the winter woods. This program is part of our Family Adventures in Nature series: Bring the whole family to the Cayuga Nature Center on Sundays this winter for great outdoor adventures! Each week we will investigate new topics through extraordinary activities and hike different areas of our five miles of beautiful trails. On days when there is enough snow on the ground, there will be snowshoes available for the hike! All ages welcome! Reservations not required, but large organized groups are asked to call ahead. Admission: $3 Adults, $2 Students and Seniors, $1 Children (2-11). CNC Members are free, MOTE Members receive a dollar off adult admission. More...

Beginner Bird Walks at Sapsucker Woods

Come to Sapsucker Woods for a leisurely walk through the sanctuary. These walks are aimed at beginner bird watchers and last approximately 1-1.5 hours. Dress for the weather and bring a pair of binoculars and field guide (if you have them).Some binoculars may be available. Walks will be led by Cornell Lab of Ornithology volunteer docents. More...

  • The Tompkins County Public Library Board of Trustees voted unanimously to appoint Susan A. Currie as the Library's newest director. A resolution read during a special meeting of the board cited Currie's distinguished 28-year career as a librarian with ever-increasing professional responsibilities.   • The History Center has opened a new Map Room in our small gallery, with several historic maps of Ithaca and Tompkins County, dating back to 1853. It is possible to see the development of downtown Ithaca, noting the business district as it spread out from Owego Street, now State Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The History Center Map Room is a permanent exhibit.
